Antique Pair Japanese Imari Porcelain Plates Bowls Scalloped Edge Decorative Display Dishes

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful pair of Japanese Imari porcelain plates dating from the early 20th century. These decorative pieces display the classic and highly desirable Imari palette of deep cobalt blue, rich iron red and subtle gilt highlights, all arranged in an elegant floral design.

Each plate features a central vase of flowering branches surrounded by panels of chrysanthemums and stylised foliage. The scalloped rims and vibrant hand-painted decoration create a striking display whether used on a dining table, sideboard, cabinet or wall.

Imari wares were produced for both the Japanese domestic market and export trade and became highly fashionable in Europe for their bold colours and intricate decoration. These examples retain excellent colour and would make an attractive addition to any collection of oriental ceramics.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region of Japan and was exported to Europe through the port of Imari starting in the seventeenth century. The style gained immense popularity across European stately homes during the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries due to its distinctive palette and detailed brushwork.

Imari porcelain is constructed from kaolin-rich white porcelain clay. The production involves a high-temperature firing with underglaze cobalt blue decoration, followed by secondary lower-temperature enamel firings for the overglaze iron red, orange, and gilding.

Authentic pieces display hand-painted variations in the cobalt blue underglaze and iron-red enamel brushwork. They typically feature spur marks on the base from kiln firing supports, uneven glaze pooling, and characteristic scalloped rims or paneled designs.

Imari porcelain can be styled as a pair on plate stands atop a sideboard or console table to create symmetry. Alternatively, mounting them on a gallery wall alongside contemporary art adds historic texture, colour contrast, and visual interest.

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water using a mild dish soap and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive sponges, chemical cleaners, and dishwashers, as these will wear away the delicate overglaze iron-red enamel and gold gilding.
