Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan, named after the port of Imari from which it was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century. Renowned for its underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red decoration, it became highly prized across European estates.

Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired kaolin porcelain clay. The decorative process involves applying underglaze cobalt blue before the initial firing, followed by hand-painted overglaze enamels in iron red, gold, and other colours during subsequent lower-temperature firings.

Authentic pieces generally display distinctive spur marks on the base from kiln supports, slight unevenness in the glaze, and rich underglaze blue paired with iron-red enamelling. Hand-painted variations in pattern intensity and subtle wear to gold gilding also indicate historical production.

These decorative chargers can be mounted on a neutral wall to create a focal feature, styled upright on brass easels atop a sideboard, or incorporated into a gallery wall alongside contemporary artwork for contrast.

Clean porcelain plates using a soft microfibre cloth and lukewarm water with mild detergent. Avoid abrasive sponges, harsh chemical cleaners, or submersion in hot water, as these can degrade hand-painted enamels and delicate gilding.
