Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This monumental Gothic Revival breakfront bookcase in walnut dates from 1890 and originates from Northern Europe. The dark brown timber finish displays rich grain patterns across the architectural framework, which stands 310 cm high, 203 cm wide, and 72 cm deep. The upper section comprises glazed doors with pointed arches and intricate Gothic tracery, surmounted by a central pediment, crocketed finials, and blind fretwork panels. The lower section includes three shallow drawers above fielded cupboard doors fitted with metal drop handles and Gothic-style brass escutcheons. Decorative carving appears on the spandrels and vertical colonnettes, complemented by delicate crenellation along the upper cornice. In a modern home, this substantial storage piece suits a grand living room, a traditional library, or a formal study. It provides ample display shelving behind the upper glass doors and concealed storage within the lower cupboards for books, collections, or tableware.

FAQs

Gothic Revival furniture from this era draws architectural inspiration from medieval cathedrals, featuring pointed arches, tracery carving, finials, and heavy timber construction popularised across Europe during the Victorian period.

These pieces were typically crafted using dense hardwoods such as walnut or oak, featuring hand-carved decorative motifs, solid frame-and-panel construction, and glass window panes set within wooden tracery.

Authentic late 19th-century examples display hand-cut joinery, original iron or brass hardware, secondary timber drawer linings showing age-related shrinkage, and intricate hand-carved detailing that retains subtle tool marks.

To incorporate a Gothic Revival cabinet into a modern setting, position it against a neutral backdrop as a focal statement piece, pairing it with minimal upholstery and contemporary lighting to create visual contrast.

Dust carved walnut regularly using a soft dry brush to clean intricate recesses, apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, and preserve the wood by keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
