Description

Outstanding International Watch Company solid 18ct gold calibre 852 automatic gents wristwatch from 1951.

The attention to detail is what makes these IWC watches stand out from other manufacturers.

The legendary IWC in house calibre 852 fully automatic Chronometer grade movement is regarded as one of the finest automatics ever made and known as the "watchmakers watch" as you can see is in superb condition.

The movement has Pelaton automatic winding the most effecient type of winding system but very expensive to make.

The minute markers are small polished gilt circles that are individually machined into the surface of the dial, everyone else like Rolex and Omega just used printed minute markers.

The seconds hand is domed along its whole length meaning that from any angle the light reflects along its centre line, these are very difficult to make, everyone else just used standard flat topped seconds hands

As you can see it is in fabulous condition having just been fully serviced.

The dial is perfect having been professionally restored

The diameter of the case is slightly oversize for this period at 35mm in diameter without the winding crown. As you would expect the watch is fully marked on the dial, movement and case.

IWC are one of the most exclusive watchmakers in the world and this watch certainly has that understated elegance that whispers class indeed this is one of the best examples we have ever had, a rare find.

The serial number dates this watch to 1951 and the hallmark also confirms the date as 1951

We can fit any colour or style of strap you prefer.

It has a genuine IWC buckle to finish it off.

The watch has just been fully serviced. It has been fully authenticated and found to be a genuine IWC in all respects and comes with a one year warranty.

If you only ever buy one vintage watch we couldn't recommend anything better than an IWC .

We offer a highly personalised and bespoke service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Introduced in the early 1950s, the Calibre 852 is renowned as one of IWCs earliest and most robust in-house automatic movements, featuring the efficient Pellaton winding system.

These timepieces typically feature solid 18-carat or 14-carat gold cases, acrylic crystals, enamel or metal dials, and genuine leather straps.

Authenticity is verified by checking serial and case numbers stamped on the inside of the case back against factory ledgers, alongside inspecting the signed movement caliber.

A vintage gold dress watch pairs seamlessly with tailored formal wear, sharp business attire, or elevated minimalist everyday tailoring.

Keep the watch away from moisture and magnetic fields, avoid manual winding if it is an automatic unless necessary for starting, and service the movement every three to five years.
