Georgian Silver Black Dot Paste Pendant Necklace

18th century
For Sale by Corvidae Antique
Description

A stunning and substantial 19th century pendant necklace with an ornate scrolling design and a pretty six-petalled flower at its centre.

The pendant would have started out as a different piece of Georgian jewellery, we believe part of a belt buckle or cloak clasp, and has been converted into a chunky necklace with a vintage sterling silver chain.

Most of the stones are black dot with a small number of old replacements - the Georgians (c.1714-1837) would paint a black dot on the bottom end of paste stones (the culet) to help give an illusion of depth and make them look more like real diamonds as they glittered in the candlelight.

SIZE: The pendant measures approximately 4.8 x 5.3cm, the chain is approx 18 inches long.

WEIGHT: 28.2g.

MATERIALS: 925 sterling silver, paste gemstones.

HALLMARKS/STAMPS: None on the pendant. The chain is stamped 925 (sterling silver).

CONDITION: The pendant is in good solid antique condition, with no missing stones but a few replacements and some minor chips and abrasions visible under magnification, as you'd expect with a piece of this age.

ERA: Georgian (c.1714-1837) with later chain.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, black dot paste jewellery features hand-cut lead glass gemstones with a small black dot painted onto the culet to mimic the open culet depth of old-cut diamonds under candlelight.

These pieces were crafted in sterling silver using closed-back settings, where metallic foil was placed behind each glass stone to maximize reflection and luminosity within hand-shaped metal mounts.

Authentic Georgian paste is identified by soft-edged hand-cut glass, closed foil-backed settings, dark painted culet dots, and evidence of hand-engraved or hand-carved silver mounts rather than modern casting.

An antique silver paste pendant serves as a focal statement piece when worn against monochrome tailoring, minimalist necklines, or layered alongside contemporary fine silver chains.

Foil-backed paste must never be submerged in water or liquid cleaners, as moisture will tarnish or ruin the foil beneath the glass; clean gently with a dry microfibre cloth and store in a low-humidity setting.
