FAQs

Zanzibar chests, also known as spice or Omani chests, originated in the Persian Gulf and East Africa, traditionally used by merchants for storing valuables and spices during maritime trade.

These chests are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like teak or rosewood, heavily reinforced with brass strapwork, decorative studs, and elaborate clasp mechanisms.

Authentic pieces feature hand-hammered brass work, traditional dovetail joinery, handmade iron or brass hardware, and signs of age such as patina and oxidation on the metal components.

A Zanzibar chest works well as a statement coffee table in a living room, an end-of-bed storage solution in a bedroom, or an entryway accent piece, adding texture and global character.

Maintain the wood with occasional applications of natural beeswax and clean the brass gently using a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can strip the historic patina.
