The Empire style originated in early 19th-century France, characterised by classical proportions, symmetry, and architectural elements such as columns and pilasters influenced by ancient Rome and Greece.

Cabinetmakers typically utilised solid foundational woods such as oak or pine, veneered with highly figured decorative timbers like mahogany, walnut, or burr ash to create striking grain patterns.

Authenticity is determined by traditional construction methods, such as hand-cut dovetail joints in drawer construction, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, and hand-applied polish rather than modern synthetics.

Pairing a richly figured wooden nightstand with minimalist modern lighting and neutral walls creates a balanced focal point that highlights the historical craftsmanship without overwhelming the room.

Maintain burr wood surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the timber.
