Description

This is a late Georgian/William IV mouth-blown, cut glass preserve bowl or butter tub, cover and stand dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1830.

The bowl is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear consistent with some 200 years of use.

The bowl has a cup-shaped bowl and measures 12.5 cm (5 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The bowl cut with a band of thin olives above a band of panel cutting, above a prism cut, above a medial band of diamonds, above a prism cut above a basal band of panel cutting. The conical foot is plain. There is a polished out pontil mark to the underside of the foot. The bowl is 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in height without the cover and 13.5 cm (5.4 inches) in height with the cover on and placed on the stand.

The cover is radially cut to the underside and we believe it to be the original. It is of the same colour and metal as the bowl and is a good fit. It is cut with prism cutting and has a facet-cut ball finial.

The stand is also radially cut to the underside and sports a polished out pontil mark.

There are no significant chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other evidence of restoration. An impressive piece of cut glass in almost pristine condition. A rare survivor.

Anglo Irish lead glass weighing in at 845 g. (~ 1 lb 14 oz).
