We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III tray top commode is an 18th-century piece of English furniture designed primarily for bedroom use. It typically features a raised gallery top with cut-out handles, a double-door cupboard section, and a lower drawer or pull-out commode compartment.

Georgian commodes were predominantly constructed using dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany, valued for its durability and rich grain pattern. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings, while hardware was typically cast brass.

Authentic pieces display hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-planed secondary woods, original brass fittings with period patina, and characteristic Georgian proportions. Look for hand-cut carrying handles cut directly into the gallery sides.

These versatile case pieces function well as bedside tables or occasional side tables beside a sofa. The galleried top provides a secure surface for table lamps and decorative objects, while internal storage conceals everyday items.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
