Imari porcelain is a type of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita, in the former Hizen Province, and shipped from the port of Imari. It originated in the early 17th century during the Edo period and became immensely popular in European royal courts.

Traditional Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired white porcelain clay and are characterised by a distinctive palette consisting primarily of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, and accented with gilt gold overglaze.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-painted motifs, slight imperfections consistent with manual firing processes, spur marks on the base from kiln supports, and an aged glaze texture that may show fine crazing or wear.

These decorative plates can be displayed on plate stands on mantelpieces, hung on walls as part of a gallery arrangement, or styled on sideboard tops to introduce vibrant colour, pattern, and historical depth to a room.

Antique porcelain should be washed by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals. Due to the fragility of overglaze enamels and potential gilt wear, they are not suitable for dishwashers or daily utility use.
