Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Internal push-rod ejector mechanism: typical Victorian hollow-stem metal candlestick construction.
Dark grey matte patina: slow oxidisation typical of antique pewter.
Soft rounding to cast petal edges: gentle wear from decades of handling.
Worn textile baize glued to base rim: old table-protection fitting.

This matched pair of late 19th century English Victorian candlesticks follows the Art Nouveau manner, rendered in dark grey pewter with a smooth metallic finish. Each piece stands 23 cm high with a width and depth of 13.5 cm, taking up modest space on a display surface. The design incorporates a wide fluted base, a knopped stem with raised mouldings, and an organically curved sconce with a sinuous profile. Original push-ejectors are retained within the stems, currently secured by accumulated candle wax. Minor surface scuffs appear across the metallic bodies. Suitable for domestic placement on a mantelpiece or side table, these candlesticks bring period character to traditional or eclectic interiors. They function practically as table lighting or serve as decorative objects in a living room, dining room, or study. Their dark grey hue complements neutral surfaces and period furniture arrangements.

Art Nouveau pewter metalware, prominent between 1890 and 1910, is characterised by organic forms, sinuous curves, and natural motifs inspired by botanical shapes. Unlike traditional formal metalwork, Art Nouveau pieces feature flowing contours and soft, muted finishes.

Victorian pewter candlesticks were typically cast using alloy moulds containing tin, copper, antimony, and occasionally lead. The sections were cast individually, turned, and soldered together before hand-finishing or polishing.

Authentic antique pewter displays natural oxidisation, touchmarks or makers marks stamped into the metal, and slight irregularities from historical casting processes. Genuine aged pewter has a dull, silvery-grey patina rather than a bright, uniform sheen.

Pewter candlesticks add textural contrast to contemporary interiors when placed on a minimalist mantelpiece, dining table, or sideboard. Pairing them with natural linen runners or muted ceramic decor highlights their subdued metallic finish.

Antique pewter should be dusted gently with a soft microfiber cloth and washed in lukewarm soapy water if necessary. Polishing should be kept to a minimum using specialised metal polishes to preserve the historical patina.
