Technical Description
A superb 19th century personal Amethyst Mell glass decanter, dating to c1840.
It has what is probably its original cork and metal stopper with a narrow neck with a polished pontil to the base.
The form was popular in the 19th century, however, a small, personal sized example, holding approx. 1/2 bottle of wine, is rare...less of them made, and less of them around today as a consequence.
Personal decanters are smaller versions of their larger cousins, and as their name suggests, were for personal use, sitting on the side table next to you, rather than for use in a more formal dining occasion.
This example comes from a small collection of personal decanters we will be presenting.
