An Attractive Early 20thc Painted Good Sized Storage Box

1920 - 1940
Description

An Attractive Good Sized Painted Box with Horse Racing features with 'Sir Tatton Sykes' and 'Newmarket etc written on it as well as a painted racehorse. Inside is papered well out. Early 20thc

Sir Tatton Sykes was born in 1772: and he chose to wear 18th century dress all his life. He lived on the 34,000 acres of the family seat of Sledmere House, the largest estate in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The Sykes family was one that thought little of building an entire village – Sledmere – to support it, or of hiring the most noted landscape designer of the age, Capability Brown, to transform its parkland. They employed the foremost designers, plasterers and architects of the period to fashion the house itself. They were rich, energetic, resourceful … and eccentric.

Sir Tatton grew up to be an informed and intelligent sheep breeder, but his first love was horse racing. Apparently he even sold a copy of the Gutenberg Bible to support his stables and foxhounds. In the unlikely event that a copy of this book came onto the market today, it would probably sell for between $25 million and $35 million.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Equestrian storage chests are utilitarian or decorative wooden trunks featuring hand-painted scenes of racehorses, jockey portraits, or sporting iconography, traditionally popular in early 20th-century British country homes.

These chests were typically crafted from softwoods such as pine or cedar, assembled using dovetail or nailed joints, and finished with oil-based paints and protective varnishes.

Authentic pieces feature natural paint crazing, age-appropriate wear around handling points, historical joinery techniques, and original hand-lettered or hand-painted artwork rather than modern stencil work.

A painted chest functions effectively as a focal point in an entryway, a coffee table in a living space, or placed at the foot of a bed to add historic character and functional storage.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoid chemical solvents or wet cleaning agents that may strip original paint layers, and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
