Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the Aesthetic Movement and Regency Revival periods, ebonised bookcases feature wood treated or stained black to imitate ebony timber. Inset Jasperware or Wedgwood plaques were integrated to provide Classical contrast and decorative refinement to library furniture.

These bookcases typically feature solid timber frames coated in a dark ebonised stain or lacquer finish. Interior backing panels were frequently painted in contrasting muted tones, and decorative elements included porcelain roundels, brass mounts, and adjustable shelf pegs.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural wear along the ebonised finish revealing underlying timber grain, hand-cut joinery on back panels, and flush inset ceramic roundels rather than surface-glued modern reproductions. The patina of interior paintwork and historic shelf adjustment holes also indicate age.

Position the pair symmetrically along an expansive wall space to anchor the room visually. Style the contrasting pale shelves with a combination of bound volumes, ceramic objects, and framed artwork to highlight the graphic monochrome frame.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh solvent cleaners or water on the ebonised finish. Clean inset Jasperware roundels gently with a soft dry brush to remove dust from low-relief details without moistening the surrounding wood.
