The Empire name was acquired by Smiths in 1932 when they purchased English Clock & Watch
Manufacturers Ltd. from the receivers (ECWM was formed from an amalgamation of H Williamson Ltd. and Grimshaw & Baxter & J.J. Elliott in 1921). Smiths are said to have used Empire lever timepieces in large numbers in marine clocks for 20 years or so after they acquired the name.
