Bristol blue glass gained popularity in the late 18th and 19th centuries, often characterised by its deep cobalt hue. French glassmakers frequently embellished these imported or locally produced vessels with hand-painted enamel and gilt motifs, creating luxurious boudoir accessories for the Victorian market.

These pieces typically consist of mould-blown or free-blown coloured glass fitted with cast brass or gilt metal mounts and hinges. The surface decoration involves hand-applied vitreous enamel paints cured at high temperatures, often supplemented with delicate gilding.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-mixed enamel with slight tactile relief, natural wear to any surface gilding, and period-appropriate hinge mechanisms rather than modern machine screws. Pontil marks on the base of blown glass components also indicate older manufacturing methods.

Position the piece on a dressing table, mantlepiece, or open bookshelf to introduce a focal point of rich colour and historic texture. It pairs well with modern minimalist surfaces where its intricate craftsmanship can stand out as an objet dart.

Clean the item using only a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, soaking in water, or abrasive materials, as these can permanently damage the fragile hand-painted enamel and delicate metallic gilding.
