FAQs

Nineteenth-century country benches were utilitarian items handcrafted for everyday use in rural homes, cottages, and workshops, often utilizing locally sourced timbers.

These pieces typically combined hardwearing native timbers such as elm for seats and ash or oak for legs, often employing pegged mortise and tenon joints.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-cut joinery, natural wear patterns, tool marks, patination consistent with age, and the use of period-appropriate timber species.

Such pieces function well as hallway seating, at the foot of a bed, or paired with a dining table to introduce tactile warmth and historical contrast.

Maintain the wood by avoiding direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the surface.
