What traditional materials were used to construct antique grandfather clocks?

Traditional construction typically involved solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, housing brass or iron mechanical movements with painted or brass dials.

How should an antique grandfather clock be styled in a modern interior?

This piece acts as a strong vertical focal point and pairs well with minimalist contemporary furniture to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Longcase clocks emerged in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement, allowing for longer pendulums and narrower weights housed within a tall wooden case.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the dovetail joints, hand-cut screws, the matching of movement and dial to the cabinet, and natural oxidisation marks on the internal components.

Preservation requires keeping the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources, ensuring it stands on a level surface, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
