19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A late 19thC pair of French brass candlesticks c1880. The candlesticks are cast in quite heavy brass, a mark of quality, on square bases with lions paw feet. They are ornately decorated with fleur de lys, acanthus leaves, shells, and fluting, rising to fixed sconces and drip pans. A delightful and rare detail is the sun ray designs beneath the drip pans. The pair are rather magnificent in their way. They have been professionally repolished to show the detail and are in very good condition for their age.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Granular sand-cast surface inside the bases: typical late nineteenth-century metal founding.
Lion-paw feet and shell relief moulding: popular French Renaissance Revival design.
Radiating fluted pattern under the square pans: careful period foundry modelling.
Dark oxidisation remaining in recesses: decades of natural ageing beneath the polished surface.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This pair of late nineteenth-century French candlesticks dates from around 1880 and represents the nineteenth-century French style. Made from cast brass with a warm gold colour, the pieces are finished with a professional repolishing that highlights the intricate details. Each candlestick stands on a square base supported by raised lion's paw feet, featuring ornate relief decoration including fleur-de-lys, acanthus leaves, shells, fluting, sun ray designs beneath the drip pans, and fixed sconces. The overall dimensions measure 24 cm high, 12.5 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, these candlesticks suit placement on a mantelpiece to add a decorative touch to a room. The heavy brass construction and detailed ornamentation provide a traditional focal point for display in a living room, dining area, or hallway. The pair brings classical French chateau character to surface displays without requiring specialized placement.

Late nineteenth-century French brass candlesticks often feature heavy cast construction, intricate relief ornamentation such as acanthus leaves and scrollwork, square or shaped bases, and classical or Rococo revival design influences.

Candlesticks from this period were primarily made using sand-casting or lost-wax techniques, where molten brass was poured into moulds before being hand-chased, turned, and polished to achieve detailed decorative finishes.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of hand-finishing, threaded central stems connecting separate cast components, subtle variations from casting moulds, and natural wear or surface tarnish consistent with age.

Pairing brass candlesticks on a fireplace mantelpiece, dining table centrepiece, or console table introduces warmth, texture, and historical contrast within modern or traditional interior schemes.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth. To preserve natural patination, avoid abrasive cleaners; if a bright surface finish is preferred, apply a specialised brass polish sparingly with a microfibre towel.
