Tudor-period Welsh Oak Carved Chest Or Coffer, Circa 1560

£5,300    $7,092    €6,206
A truly magnificent coffer of small proportions in the traditional six-plank form, made of native Welsh oak. The lid has a moulded front and rear with chip-carved edges, joined to the box with pin hinges. The front has a bold and deeply-carved running floral ornament of exceptional quality, above the original idiosyncratic owner''s initials ''SH'', and with chip-carved edges. There are also later stamped inventory initials, ''RR''. The protruding sides are raised on shaped ''feet''.

The coffer has the most wonderful untouched historical finish.
