Dutch Delftware originated in the city of Delft in the Netherlands during the 17th century, developing as a European tin-glazed earthenware imitation of imported Chinese porcelain.

Authentic pieces are crafted from local clay, fired to form an earthenware biscuit, coated with an opaque tin-oxide glaze that creates a white surface, and then hand-painted with mineral pigments before a final transparent glaze firing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit characteristic weight, minor glaze imperfections, hand-painted brushwork with slight variations, and an earthenware body that may show age-related crazing or chipping on the unglazed footrims.

These pieces can be displayed on plate hangers to create a curated wall display, mounted in traditional plate rails, or exhibited upright on wooden plate stands within open shelving units.

To preserve the glaze and pigments, these delicate items should be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water with mild detergent when necessary, avoiding dishwashers, harsh chemicals, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
