Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Tin glaze over buff earthenware: typical 18th-century delftware production.
Rim fritting revealing the body beneath: natural wear on tin glaze.
Hand-painted polychrome colours: typical mid-18th century high-temperature palette.
Pinholes and irregular surface: typical early kiln firing behaviour.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of eighteenth-century Delft decorative plates exhibits a round shape with fritted rims and a tin-glazed earthenware body. The ceramics display a pale off-white glaze and a hand-painted polychrome finish featuring floral motifs in blue, green, and iron-red arranged centrally and across the borders. Each circular plate shows small rim chips along the edges as signs of age and handling, consistent with utilitarian European earthenware from around 1750. Each plate measures 3.5 cm high, 22.5 cm wide, and 22.5 cm deep. These items fit naturally in an English Country House interior style and suit display on a mantelpiece or shelf as decorative accents within a living area or dining space.

FAQs

Delftware developed in the seventeenth century in the Netherlands as an affordable European alternative to imported Chinese porcelain. Production expanded into England, producing tin-glazed earthenware decorated with hand-painted blue-and-white or polychrome designs.

Delftware is crafted from an earthenware clay body covered with an opaque white glaze containing tin oxide. Pigments derived from metallic oxides, such as cobalt blue, copper green, and iron red, were hand-painted onto the unfired glaze before final firing.

Authentic period pieces feature a reddish or pale buff earthenware core visible at rim chips, characteristic rim glaze loss known as fritting, pinholes in the opaque white tin glaze, and evidence of hand-painted brushwork rather than printed patterns.

These decorative ceramics can be displayed on brass wire hangers as wall art, arranged along traditional plate rills, or styled upright on a mantelpiece or sideboard top using discrete plate stands.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding complete immersion or harsh abrasive sponges. Never place tin-glazed earthenware in a dishwasher, and handle carefully to prevent further glaze fritting along the edges.
