Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1900s.
The 56-hour movement, mounted within its brass gimbals, features stopwork; Harrisons maintaining power; Earnshaw-type spring detente escapement and a two-arm balance wheel with blued helical hairspring.
The fine silvered dial, with its Roman numerals, features a large subsidiary seconds dial above “VI” and an “Up-and-Down” dial beneath “XII”. It is engraved: A. Johannsen & Co., makers to the Admiralty; the Indian Government and the “Royal Navies of Italy, Spain & Portugal”. It is also engraved with the Minories (London) address of the makers and the number 7396, which is to be found on the case. Perfect working order and guaranteed for at least two years.
Asmus Johannsen, who was Danish, was established n London in 1859. He made chronometers for Austria and China as well as those mentioned on the dial of this example. He was highly regarded and his work was frequently submitted to the Greenwich Time Trials where it was awarded high marks. A similar chronometer, numbered 7709 and therefore somewhat later than this example, is exhibited at the Royal Museum, Greenwich.
