Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

French bedside tables, often referred to as tables de chevet, gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries. The inclusion of marble tops became popular for practical reasons, offering a durable and hygienic surface resistant to spills from medicine bottles and water pitchers.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed using solid hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or oak for the frame, often featuring exotic veneers on the drawer fronts. Traditional joinery such as dovetailing is standard for the drawers, topped with fitted marble slabs.

Authentication involves examining construction details such as hand-cut dovetail joints, wood shrinkage patterns, hand-forged or cast brass hardware, and the thickness and veining of the marble slab. Machine-cut screws, modern glues, and uniform artificial ageing typically indicate a reproduction.

Such pieces add character and warmth to modern minimalist or transitional bedrooms by introducing textural contrast against sleek walls and contemporary bedding. They function effectively as standalone nightstands or as compact accent tables in a living space.

Mahogany should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry cloth and treated periodically with appropriate wax to maintain the finish, avoiding silicone-based sprays. Marble requires sealing to prevent staining and should be cleaned only with mild, pH-neutral soap and water.
