Description

This is a rare Georgian three ring mallet-shaped decanter and acorn stopper, probably originating in Northern Ireland (Belfast) at the beginning of the 19th century. This attribution comes from the angular neck rings (although Belfast decanters are most often seen with just two such rings) and the fact that the stopper and neck of the decanter are polished in rather than ground. There is an almost identical decanter, with the three rings but without a stopper, on page 130 (plate 96) of Phelps Warren's book "Irish Glass", and which is held in the Ulster Museum in Belfast.

The decanter is in excellent condition. This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 200 years of use.

The decanter is mallet-shaped with a plain neck decorated with three applied angular rings. The body is plain as is the base that measures 11.7 cm (4.7 inches) in diameter. The decanter is 22.5 cm (9 inches) in height without the stopper and 29.5 cm (11.8 inches) in height with the stopper inserted.

The stopper is of the very rare acorn form (perhaps representing the Boscobel oak) and may or may not be the original. It is of the same colour and metal as the decanter, is of the correct form and is a reasonable fit. It moves around a little in the neck although Irish decanters, in our experience, often have reasonably loose fitting stoppers. One Antiques Roadshow expert reckons that Irish decanters and stoppers were matched by lining up the decanters on one side of a room and throwing stoppers at them; they were then sent out with the ones that landed closest to them!

There are some minute flea bite chips to the end of the stopper peg. There are no other chips, cracks, significant scratches, water staining or any obvious evidence of restoration.

Lead crystal glass decanter weighing in at 900 g. (~ 2 lb.).
