Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Vertical soldered seam down the body: early fused-plate sheet construction.
Four struck marks beside the rim: Sheffield plating practice before the 1784 Act.
Copper colour showing through the spout edges: silver fused over a copper base.
Hammer marks under the base and lid: shaped by hand over raising stakes.
Carved dark wooden handle pinned into sockets: standard Georgian metalware mounting.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Georgian Old Sheffield plated coffee pot dates to the eighteenth century and follows a traditional English country house design. The piece has a silver finish with a pear-shaped body, a fluted spout, a stepped round base, and a domed lid topped with a pinecone finial. A turned dark wooden handle with a carved thumb piece attaches to the side via small silver mounts. Visible construction seams run down the body, accompanied by four unattributed first generation marks stamped near the rim. The pot stands 25 cm high, 17.5 cm wide, and 8.5 cm deep, weighing 464 g. In a modern interior, this item serves as a decorative display piece on a dining room sideboard top or a living room console table. The silver-plated surface catches the light while the wooden handle provides a contrasting dark tone against the bright metal body. The compact proportions make it suitable for placement on narrow surfaces alongside other tableware or as a standalone focal point in a traditional setting.

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is a technique developed in the 18th century involving the thermal fusion of copper between thin layers of sterling silver before shaping into hollowware and utensils.

Coffee pots from this era were formed by hand-hammering fused metal sheets into baluster or pear shapes, fitted with cast spouts, hinged lids, and wooden handles to insulate heat.

Authentic items often show faint copper exposure where silver worn thin, maker marks or pseudomarks, hand-soldered seams, and carved wooden handles held by small rivets.

Place the vessel on a dining sideboard, bar cart, or display cabinet as a decorative accent to introduce historical texture and metallic interest to a room.

Dust regularly and clean gently using warm soapy water and a soft cotton cloth, avoiding abrasive polishes that strip away the delicate fused silver layer over the copper base.
