Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Vertical brazed seam inside the body: rolled fused plate construction before electroplating.
Engraved monogram showing the underlying copper: fused plate wear.
Turned wooden handle pinned directly into sockets: typical late eighteenth-century fitting.
Neoclassical urn form on a pedestal foot: popular in the 1780s and 1790s.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Georgian coffee jug from the 18th century is constructed from Old Sheffield Plate with a silver finish, complemented by a dark brown turned wooden scroll handle. The urn-shaped body stands on a round pedestal base and features a domed lid with a small spherical finial, horizontal moulding lines around the upper shoulder, and a cast spout with a minor loss of edging. An ornate monogram is engraved on the front with slight copper bleed showing through the silver plating, while the interior is visibly seamed and clean. Measuring 27 cm high, 25.5 cm wide, and 11 cm deep, the piece weighs approximately 759g. Suitable for use in a traditional English country house interior, this jug makes a decorative addition to a sideboard top. It serves as a striking display item or can be incorporated into period table settings during formal dining occasions or gatherings.

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is a metalworking process developed in the 18th century where a sheet of silver was fused onto copper under heat and pressure before being crafted into hollowware.

Georgian coffee jugs were predominantly constructed from fused silver and copper plate or sterling silver, often featuring carved wooden or ivory handles to insulate the user from heat.

Authentic pieces often exhibit silver bleeding where the underlying copper shows through from wear, visible seams from construction, and unplated silver inserts beneath engraved monograms.

An antique silver coffee jug can be displayed as a decorative accent on a dining room sideboard, open kitchen shelving, or a curated mantelpiece alongside contemporary ceramics.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals or over-polishing which can wear away the thin layer of fused silver, and never submerge wooden elements in water.
