Antique Burr Walnut Cabinet on Chest

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely antique burr walnut cabinet on chest. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1920-30’s period.

It is of excellent quality, with stunning burr walnut grain patterns and lots of storage space. The upper compartment contains a removable shelf and comes with a locking key. The lower half sits on bracket feet and contains three generous drawers. There is a useful pull out sliding shelf in the middle, and the top lifts right off, so this breaks down into two pieces for ease of transport.

The top has lovely canted and reeded edges, the door and drawer fronts have beautifully cross banded edges.

This is a versatile piece, it would work well as a drinks cabinet or even as a bedroom storage cupboard.

We have had this recently re-polished, it is in excellent condition for its age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cabinet on chest is a classic piece of British case furniture comprising a two-door upper cupboard mounted upon a lower chest of drawers. Popularised during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, it offered versatile vertical storage for textiles, clothing, and household items.

Queen Anne period pieces frequently feature figure-rich burr walnut veneers applied over solid oak or pine carcases, often finished with crossbanded or feather-banded borders and brass drop handles.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or deal drawer linings, natural shrinkage split lines consistent with aged timber, and genuine patination across original veneers and brass hardware.

Position the cabinet as a focal architectural piece against a neutral wall, balancing its tall vertical proportion with subtle modern textiles, understated lighting, or minimalist artwork.

Apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain every few months, maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent veneer lift, and keep the timber positioned away from direct sunlight and heat radiators.
