FAQs

A mule chest is a traditional form of storage furniture that evolved in the 17th and 18th centuries by adding one or more drawers beneath the primary lift-lid compartment of a traditional blanket chest.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native hardwoods like English oak, utilizing frame-and-panel construction techniques with hand-cut dovetails for the drawers and traditional peg joinery.

Authenticity is determined by examining timber shrinkage, tool marks from hand planes, hand-forged iron or brass hardware, and the presence of handmade joinery rather than modern fasteners.

Such pieces provide functional storage in hallways or living rooms while serving as a grounding anchor that introduces historical texture and warmth to modern minimalist schemes.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically treat the wood with traditional beeswax to nourish the finish without sealing the grain.
