Apothecary jars originated in medieval times to store medicinal herbs, syrups, and compounds. By the 19th century, European pharmacies utilised standardised glass containers with hand-etched or fired labels to safely organise substances while maintaining chemical stability.

These vessels were typically mouth-blown or mould-blown from heavy-duty soda-lime glass, often tinted amber or cobalt blue to protect light-sensitive contents. Labels were frequently reverse-painted on glass panels, acid-etched, or glazed in fired ceramic enamel.

Authentic 19th-century jars feature distinct characteristics such as pontil marks on the base, minor surface bubbles, hand-ground glass stoppers unique to each neck, and genuine wear to the enamel or etched labels consistent with age and handling.

They can be displayed singly as sculptural objects on a mantelpiece or grouped on open shelving and sideboards to introduce rich colour, historical depth, and texture into both minimalist and traditional interiors.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives or chemical solvents that could damage the historic painted or etched labels. Handle stoppers with care, as ground glass necks and stoppers are prone to chipping if mismatched.
