George II Concave Mahogany Commode

18th century
For Sale by Baggott & Co.
Description

George II concave mahogany commode

An exceptional Georgian mahogany tray-top commode of unusually large scale and quality. The raised gallery pierced to the sides to form a pair of handles, the front of deep concave form with panelled front and moulded legs. The commode slide, with oval brass handle, pulls out on roller castors to an oak lined seat, with oak lid and ceramic liner. The sides and back are also panelled, both sides with a cupboard opening to an internal space for storage, each with original axe head handles and locking catches. Polished and panelled on all four sides so it is not a piece of furniture to be consigned to the walls of a room. Stands on roller castors.

The proportions, being substantially larger than other Georgian commodes, the quality of timber, detail of the design, together with the finesse in the moulded legs and gallery denote that this was a piece of furniture commissioned for a house and owner of stature, preserved with original handles and exceptional colour.

English, circa 1760

82cm H, 67cm W, 59cm D, the seat 45.5cm H.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the mid-18th century, a George II concave commode is a specialized piece of cabinet furniture featuring a curved inward front, designed primarily for bedside storage and practical utility in Georgian bedchambers.

Georgian commodes were predominantly constructed using solid and veneered mahogany, featuring oak secondary timbers, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, and brass hardware or drop handles.

Authentic pieces typically showcase hand-sawn timber marks, original brass hardware, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and natural oxidisation on the interior drawer casings and unpolished reverse surfaces.

A Georgian commode functions effectively as a bedside cabinet, an end table in a living room, or a compact hallway storage piece alongside minimalist contemporary decor.

Clean the timber surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax periodically in the direction of the grain, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or cracking.
