Antique Papier Mache and Mahogany Revolving Harpist Music Stool

19th century
Description

A very decorative antique Harpist music stool dating to the first half of the 19th Century. This wonderful and rare adjustable revolving music stool rises and lowers to a comfortable height.

The japanned papier mache seat, of scalloped shell form, has a centrally carved floral motif, which is also replicated on the supporting solid mahogany carved base. A turned canon centre column with a cross stretcher unites the cabriole legs.

This harpist stool is of the highest quality and was most probably made by Jennens & Bettridge of Birmingham (1815-1864), the well respected papier mache manufactures, in the 1840’s. The steel rise and fall assembly was made by J Fitter also of Birmingham.

The stool is in very good overall condition, there is some wear with slight crackling to the lacquer and a repair to the seat edge, please see photo.

Due to the fact that this is an antique item and of delicate nature it's now sold as a decorative item.

Size. Max 81cm H x 46cm W x 48cm D.

Minimum height when lowered 71cm.

Seat height Min 47cm

Seat height Max 57cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian music stools were developed during the nineteenth century to provide musicians, particularly pianists and harpists, with adjustable seating heights and freedom of movement. Designs frequently featured brass or iron threaded mechanisms that enabled the user to revolve the seat to the required height.

These pieces traditionally combined hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut for the legs and pedestal base with brass screw threads. Seats were often made from carved wood, padded upholstery, or moulded and lacquered papier-mache.

Authentic nineteenth-century music stools feature heavy cast iron or brass threaded spindles, hand-cut joinery, and original hand-carved details on the legs. Wear patterns should be visible around the central column, adjusting mechanism, and seat edges where handling occurs.

A music stool works well as an occasional chair in a hallway, an accent seat in a bedroom bay window, or a vanity stool beside a dressing table. Its compact dimensions make it suitable for adding historical interest to smaller alcoves or reading corners.

Clean surfaces regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly to the mahogany sections while avoiding liquid solvents or harsh chemicals on lacquered papier-mache finishes.
