Description

An 18th Century French Cherry Wood Buffet Deux Corps/Cupboard.

This piece of case furniture is a fine example of the French buffet deux corps, or two part buffet. This example is made from cherry wood of excellent colour. The doors in the top section have arched panelled centres, somewhat in the Gothic taste, with solid cherry wood. The bottom section has square panelling and there are two small drawers in between the two tiers of cupboards. The interiors of both cupboards consist of single adjustable shelves, allowing the space to be reconfigured. Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A buffet deux corps is a traditional two-part storage cabinet featuring an upper section stacked directly onto a lower base, commonly used in French provincial homes for storing tableware and provisions.

These cabinets were predominantly built using regional hardwoods such as cherry, oak, and walnut, frequently joined using traditional pegged mortise and tenon construction methods.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional wrought iron or brass hardware, hand-planed timber surfaces, and structural irregularities consistent with manual woodworking tools of the era.

Placing a large wooden cabinet against a neutral wall allows the natural grain and historic craftsmanship to act as a focal point, contrasting effectively with contemporary minimalist surroundings.

Maintain antique wooden furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and treat the timber periodically with natural beeswax to nourish the wood and preserve the finish.
