Victorian Burma Ruby & Diamond Pendant / Brooch, Circa 1890

19th century
Description

An incredible Victorian pendant / brooch set with seven natural and unheated round cabochon rubies from Burma. The six vibrant, deep red rubies on the outside are inter-spaced by pairs of white and bright eight cut diamonds. The larger ruby in the centre is set with a further eight diamonds around it. A diamond set bale on the top, as well as a yellow gold pin to the reverse means this versatile piece can either be worn as a pendant or a brooch.

The chain pictured is not original. Please note in the checkout whether you would prefer a 16" or 18" 18k yellow or white gold chain. This is included in the price.

Accompanied by a ruby report from The Gem & Pearl Laboratory stating the rubies show no evidence of heating, and are Burmese (Myanmar) in origin.

Cut:? Round cabochon rubies are eight-cut diamonds.

Colour:? The diamonds are G to H.

Clarity:? The rubies have some visible inclusions; this is common and expected in rubies. The diamonds are VS1 to VS2.

Carat:? The centre ruby is approximately 0.70 carat, with a total approximate ruby weight of 1.90 carat. The total approximate diamond weight is 0.32 carat.

Circa:? 1890.

Measurements:? Not including the bale, piece is 23.2 x 22.2mm.

Weight:? 5.33 grams.

Metal:? The front is silver, the reverse is 14k yellow gold. Tested with a Niton DXL Precious Metal Analyzer

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian jewellery from around 1890 frequently features circular cluster motifs, vibrant natural coloured gemstones such as Burmese rubies, and dual-purpose mountings designed to function as both brooches and pendants.

Pieces from this period traditionally combine yellow gold backings with silver settings for diamonds, featuring natural cabochon or faceted rubies alongside old European or rose-cut diamonds.

Authentic late 19th-century items generally exhibit hand-cut gemstones, silver-topped gold mountings, period-appropriate hinged pin mechanisms, and hand-engraved details rather than modern cast features.

A dual-function pendant brooch can be worn suspended from a delicate trace chain for daily attire, or affixed to a blazer lapel, scarf, or ribbon for formal occasions.

Store the item in a soft fabric-lined case to prevent abrasion against precious metals. Clean using mild soapy water and a soft-bristled brush, avoiding chemical dips and ultrasonic cleaners.
