Description

A rare superb quality solid silver vesta match safe case. It is unmarked but tests as high grade silver. I would date it to c1900. It has been beautifully designed being decorated with bamboo to the front and blossom and a bird to the back. The cartouche is free from any engravings. It is in very good condition being free from splits holes and repairs, a single tiny mark to the top corner. It measures approx. 1.75 inches (4.6cm) tall by 1.25 inches (3.2cm) wide and weighs 24 grams. A super quality example.

Declaration

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A vesta case is a small pocket-sized container designed to hold matches safely, popular during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries before the widespread availability of safety matches and lighters.

These items were typically constructed from sterling or coin grade silver using techniques such as stamping, engraving, repousse work, and hinged lid fabrication.

Authenticity is determined by examining maker marks, artisan hallmarks, weight, patination, and the construction quality of the hinge and striker base.

Small antique silver objects can be displayed on decorative trays, within cabinet vitrines, or utilized as desk accessories alongside modern minimalist decor.

Silver items should be stored in dry environments away from direct sunlight and polished sparingly using non-abrasive cloths to preserve the natural oxidisation.
