Rare Standing Victorian Silver Vesta Case Birmingham 1897

19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A Victorian silver vesta case with clear hallmarks for Birmingham 1897 and makers mark for Joseph Gloster. The case is rare as its rectangular form and quite deep sides and base enable it to be free standing/upright, as well as lying flat or hanging from a chain. Standing upright, it can be admired as an object in it’s own right. It is decorated with engraved scrolls on each side, with one side bearing discreet initials, WM, that match the pattern. A good gauge of silver, and in excellent condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the late nineteenth century, a vesta case is a portable container specifically created to store friction matches, known as vestas, safely inside a pocket or attached to a watch chain.

Victorian vesta cases were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or brass, featuring hand-engraved foliate patterns, engine-turned detailing, a hinged spring cover, and a ribbed striking surface along the base or side.

Authentic British silver vesta cases display official hallmarking stamps that denote the silver purity standard, assay office location, makers initials, and a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

Small silver accessories can be displayed on an office desk, styled within a glass cloche, positioned on a tray alongside curated curiosities, or housed within a glazed collectors cabinet.

Maintain silver surfaces by wiping gently with a specialized silver polishing cloth, avoiding harsh liquid dips that could remove desirable patination from recessed engraving or affect internal spring mechanisms.
