FAQs

Rummers evolved during the 18th and 19th centuries in Britain as robust drinking vessels typically used for ale, wine, or punch, with the name potentially deriving from the large rum glasses imported from the continent.

These pieces were typically crafted from lead glass or flint glass, shaped using techniques such as free-blowing into moulds, hand-cutting, and fire-polishing to achieve clarity and decorative facets.

Authentic pieces often exhibit minor surface wear, pontil marks on the base where the glass was snapped from the blowing iron, and slight imperfections or bubbles within the lead glass matrix.

Displaying antique glassware in open shelving, on a mahogany sideboard, or repurposing historical vessels as bud vases adds tactile depth and historical contrast to modern spaces.

Antique glass should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and harsh abrasive sponges to protect the delicate surface finish.
