Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1880s.
It strikes the hours and half-hours on a gong, and retains its original blued steel Breguet “moon” hands and perfect white enamel dial. The movement is numbered 7479, which is repeated on the original leather carrying case and the original winding key. The movement is signed, underneath the silvered platform: “SOLDANO”. Perfect working order and guaranteed for at least two years. Highly recommended.

JOSEPH SOLDANO, a sought-after maker of fine Carriage Clocks, won Gold medals at the Paris Exhibitions of 1855 and 1878. It was noted at the time that his escapements were particularly fine, in all probability made for him in Switzerland. The well-known firm of Dent was a regular customer of Soldano in the 1860’s.
