FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a sheet of silver to a copper ingot, predominantly manufactured in Sheffield, England, from the mid-18th century until the introduction of electroplating in the 1840s.

These pieces are constructed using the fusion plating method, where a thin layer of sterling silver is thermally bonded to a base metal core of copper, often featuring a gilded interior known as vermeil.

Authentic pieces often reveal a thin line of exposed copper along cut edges or areas of wear, lack modern electroplate hallmarks, and frequently feature makers marks or scratch weights characteristic of the period.

These metalware items can be displayed as striking sculptural objects on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or within a glass-fronted cabinet to introduce historic texture and reflective metallic accents to a room.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with non-abrasive silver polishes to avoid wearing through the thin silver layer to the underlying copper, and maintaining stable humidity levels to prevent tarnishing.
