Overshot glass is a type of art glass created by rolling a hot glass vessel over fragments of fine glass threads, causing them to adhere to the surface and create a textured, icy appearance. This technique was particularly popular during the mid-to-late Victorian era.

These vessels were typically free-blown or mold-blown using potash or soda-lime glass, with applied surface treatments like overshot threads added while the glass was still malleable. Rims were often fire-polished or gilded by hand.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished pontil marks on the base, minor irregularities consistent with mouth-blowing, and genuine wear to the glass threads and gilding. The texture should feel distinctly raised and integrated into the body rather than applied with modern adhesives.

These decorative vessels can be displayed on a sideboard or mantelpiece to catch natural light, utilised as single-stem flower vases, or styled simply on a tray to add tactile texture and historic contrast to modern spaces.

Wash antique glass gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild, non-abrasive detergent. Avoid submerging items with gilt rims or delicate applied threads for extended periods, and dry them carefully with a lint-free cloth.
