Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 1880s.
The eight-day movement strikes the hours and half-hours on a gong, repeating the hours at will via the upper button and retains its original precision lever platform escapement, with a third alarm train, also in perfect working order. The backplate is stamped with the “DC” trademark, whilst the fine enamel dial, with its subsidiary alarm dial, is inscribed with the retailers: Dent, 33, Cockspur Street, London (just off Trafalgar Square).
Serial Number: 21349, to be found on the movement; case; leather travelling case and original key. Clock dimensions: 17.5cms high; 9cms wide; 8cms deep. Thoroughly recommended.
Pierre Drocourt (b.1817) and his son Alfred (b.1847) were one of the leading carriage clockmakers of the mid-late 19th century, winning many awards including the Gold Medal in 1889. Together they made superb carriage clocks; in 1871 Alfred continued alone (with many valuable members of staff) following the death of his father. Their trademark was a stamp composed of the initials “DC” flanking a carriage clock.
