Elegant Scottish Longcase Clock, Regency

19th century
Sold by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to showcase for your consideration an excellent Regency longcase clock by a well known Scottish clockmaking dynasty.

The recently overhauled high-quality eight day movement strikes the full hours on a lovely bell and has a recoil anchor escapement. The renovated 13.5 inch circular enamel dial features a working seconds dial along with a working date subdial with matching hands to compliment the appearance and the dial is signed by the maker - Whitelaw, Edinburgh - to the centre. The movement also features a brass pendulum bob and matching brass-cased weights.

The elegantly proportioned flame mahogany veneered case of typical Scottish proportions has boxwood crossbanded throughout with reeded quarter columns to the trunk. The trunk door retains its working lock and the base also benefits from inlay and has a raised single moulding and small bracket feet. The hood has further decorative inlaid boxwood to each corner, sound windows with brass fretwork to each side of the hood and decorative chamfered edging to the front. A glazed concave brass bezel with lovely original wavy glass allows access to the dial. The hood retains its original working wooden lock for the hood to the trunk. The overall height of this clock is 6 feet 8 inches and the clock benefits from my three year warranty.

James, Alexander and David Whitelaw were highly skilled and innovative clockmakers working from the late 1700's until 1846 who specialised in longcase and bracket clocks and all appear to have worked from both 75 Princes Street and Register Street in Edinburgh. Their work is highly sought after and this clock is a fine example of their work.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with global clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
