A Fine Quality Quarter Chiming Bracket / Mantel Clock, London C.1890.

19th century
Description

A fine quality late Victorian mahogany and gilt brass mounted quarter chiming bracket clock of small proportions, London made, retailed by John Bull & Co of Bedford c.1890.

A high quality small sized triple fusee quarter chiming bracket clock of London manufacture dating from the last half of the 19th century in excellent original condition with the movement fully restored. The clock chimes Whittington on 8 graduated bells and also chimes Westminster on 4 curled blued steel gongs, chiming the hour on a further curled blued steel gong.

The solid mahogany Georgian-style bell top case of excellent colour and patinantion, surmounted with a brass handle and brass ball finials to the corners, below chamfered and reeded case corners with gilt brass fluted inlay.

Finely fretted scrolled and engraved silk lined sound frets to the case sides and above the brass bound shaped front door, beneath a stepped moulded and brass base with brass bun feet.

The original locks and keys to the front and rear opening doors.

The shallow arched brass dial with a finely executed matted dial centre, signed John Bull & Co Bedford on the silvered and engraved Roman chapter ring.

All within finely cast, gilt brass, spandrels, with further silvered subsidiary dials for chime on 8 bells or 4 gongs in the arch and a second subsidiary dial for a regulation rise and fall mechanism, with an additional selection switch for chime / chime silent located at the 12 o’clock position.

The fully restored chain driven triple fusee movement of eight day duration is of the highest quality London manufacture.

The substantial movement plates united by 5 knopped pillars having the original anchor escapement.

The movement is of the finest quality with no expense spared in manufacture, the clock chimes the quarter hours on 8 graduated bells giving a choice of Whittington eight bell chimes or Westminster chimes on four blued steel gongs with the hours being struck on a curled blue steel gong.

The London style regulation brass bob pendulum, with knurled thumbscrew pendulum restraint.

Pierced blued steel hands.
