Novelty silver pin cushions became highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often cast in whimsical animal shapes by specialist silversmiths to serve as both decorative desk items and functional sewing tools for the dressing table.

These pieces were typically crafted using sterling silver via traditional casting and hand-chasing techniques, incorporating integrated textile pads filled with material such as sawdust or felt to securely hold pins.

Authentic pieces feature a set of British hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal, typically including a makers mark, a lion passant for sterling silver, an anchor indicating the Birmingham assay office, and a date letter corresponding to the year of assay.

These small-scale decorative objects can be displayed on mantelpieces, vanity trays, or glass-fronted cabinets to add a touch of historical metallic sheen and curated character to modern spaces.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a soft microfibre cloth and a specialist non-abrasive silver polish, taking care to avoid harsh chemicals and keeping moisture away from any integrated fabric inserts.
