Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A canteen of fish cutlery is a specialised set of flatware designed specifically for eating fish courses. These sets typically include broad, dull-bladed knives for separating fish flesh from bone without cutting the bones, along with matching four-tined forks.

These sets were commonly manufactured using sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) for the working ends. Handles were constructed from silver, bone, mother-of-pearl, or carved celluloid, and the complete set was housed in a fitted wooden case lined with velvet or silk.

Authentic pieces carry makers marks or EPNS stamps near the bolster or blade base, along with retailer plaques inside the wooden case lid. Features such as notched knife blades, light hand-engraved patterns, and precisely fitted velvet interiors indicate period production.

A open wooden canteen can be displayed flat on a dining room sideboard or inside a glass display cabinet to showcase the contrasting velvet lining and polished flatware. The individual pieces can also be incorporated into formal table settings for special occasions.

Clean the metal pieces with a soft silver polishing cloth and mild soapy water, drying thoroughly before storage to prevent tarnishing. Keep the wooden case in a dry climate to avoid warping, and gently brush the velvet interior with a soft brush to remove dust.
