Opaline glass is a type of semi-opaque glass, often in pastel colours, that gained immense popularity in Europe during the 19th century, particularly within the Victorian era and the French restoration period.

Artisans typically used glassblowing techniques, incorporating bone ash or metal oxides into the glass batch to achieve the characteristic opaque, milky appearance, often finished with applied trims or hand-painted details.

Authentic pieces often display pontil marks on the base where they were snapped from the blowpipe, hand-finished rims, and subtle weight variations indicative of historical mouth-blowing methods rather than modern machine moulding.

Displaying antique glass on open shelving, mantelpieces, or as a standalone centrepiece introduces subtle colour, historical texture, and refined craftsmanship to modern minimal or eclectic schemes.

Clean antique glass gently using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive sponges, or submersion in hot water to prevent thermal shock and protect delicate historical finishes.
