Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neo-Classical design in the Victorian era drew inspiration from classical antiquity, featuring motifs such as ribbons, floral swags, laurel garlands, and symmetrical forms. These pieces combined classical aesthetics with 19th-century electroplating production techniques.

During the late 19th century, trays were predominantly manufactured using the electroplating process (EPNS), where a layer of pure silver was electrochemically deposited onto a nickel silver or base metal structure. Decorative borders and cast handles were created separately and soldered to the main tray body.

Authentic pieces usually feature manufacturer makers marks or electroplate stamps on the underside, along with hand-engraved decoration. Natural surface wear, where base metal faintly shows through at high points, along with genuine tarnish patina, also signals age.

An antique silver tray functions as an anchoring surface on a sideboard, coffee table, or drinks cabinet to organize decanters and glassware. Placing reflective silver against natural textures like dark wood, marble, or linen creates visual contrast.

Clean silver plate gently using a soft, non-abrasive cloth and specialised silver polish to maintain the plated layer. Avoid dishwashers, harsh chemicals, or abrasive scouring pads, and store in a dry space to limit oxidisation.
