Rare Large, Long Silver Plated Cocktail Tray by Hukin & Heath C.1900

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A most unusually shaped tray, very long and slim, a truly elegant example. The silver plated tray is made by the top notch and highly collectable silversmith, Hukin & Heath, fully marked on the underside.

The tray retains a highly decorative original monogram, I think an intertwined J and L, it is beautifully done and creates a very regal look.

The tray has just been returned from our silversmiths workshop, where it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory with minor wear commensurate with age and use.

A fabulous size, measuring 26 1/2" in length x 8 1/2" x 1 3/4".

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, silver-plated trays evolved from heavily ornate Victorian styles to cleaner, functional forms favoured by innovative manufacturers such as Hukin & Heath. These pieces combined electroplated nickel silver with refined proportions tailored for modern entertaining.

Trays from this era were typically constructed with an electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) or Britannia metal base, coated with a fine layer of pure silver via electroplating. Handles and rims were often cast separately and hard-soldered onto the main stamped body.

Authentic examples feature stamped makers marks, such as the H&H mark for Hukin & Heath, alongside EPNS designators or pattern numbers. Look for evidence of hand-finishing, correct historic weight, and subtle wear to the plating on high points.

A long silver tray can be styled atop a sideboard or ottoman to group decanters, glassware, or small ceramics. Its reflective surface adds light and structural symmetry to modern bar setups or living room surfaces.

Clean silver-plated items using a soft cotton cloth and a gentle polish specifically formulated for electroplated silver. Avoid abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, or dishwashers, and store in a dry location to prevent rapid oxidisation.
