Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian bedside cabinet dates to 1850 and originates from England. Constructed from burr elm wood with a golden brown finish, the piece features a rich, swirling grain pattern across all visible surfaces. The cabinet incorporates a single cupboard door set within a raised, shaped panel moulding, fitted with a small turned wooden knob on the left side. The structure rests upon a solid plinth base at the floor, while the top surface provides a flat resting area. The piece measures 76 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. In a modern interior, this compact wooden cabinet functions effectively in a bedroom beside a bed to store night-time essentials, or in a living room or study as a small side table or lamp stand. The warm timber tones suit traditional and classic English country house schemes, providing practical surface and storage space in a modest footprint.

FAQs

Bedside cupboards, historically known as pot cupboards or nightstands, emerged in the eighteenth century as dedicated bedroom storage pieces. By the nineteenth century, cabinetmakers utilised figured timbers such as burr elm and walnut to elevate these functional items into refined decorative furniture.

Victorian cabinetmakers used slices of burr elm veneer applied over a solid timber carcass, such as pine or oak. The construction features hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber mouldings, and solid turned wooden knobs or brass hardware.

Authentic burr elm features tightly swirled, dense grain patterns created by abnormal tree growths. Original period examples display natural age-related patination, hand-planed internal surfaces, and traditional joinery methods rather than modern fasteners.

An antique bedside cabinet can serve as a nightstand alongside a upholstered bed or function as an end table beside a sofa in a living room. Pairing warm timber with contemporary ceramic lamps or minimalist artwork creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax twice a year to preserve the moisture content of the wood. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent veneer lifting or cracking.
