Description

A rare elegantly shaped large William Moorcroft wisteria and plum patterned signed vase. The vase has a stunning cobalt blue ground with yellow, pink and purple wisteria plums. An excellent piece for the serious Moorcroft collector, made in Burslem. There are impressed marks to the base, Moorcroft, Made in England, and a Walter Moorcroft signature mark. Early Walter Moorcroft initials used a slate blue colour to differentiate it from his father Williams. Walters full signature mark -as seen on the photo- was only used on important pieces, one of pieces for exhibition or limited editions.

The condition is consistent with age and use, it has good overall condition with age related crazing to the yellow wisteria plums on close inspection. There is also a tiny possible chip in the glaze, only visible when the vase is laid down see the purple plum photo.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

William Moorcroft developed distinctive tube-lining techniques at James Macintyre & Co. before establishing his own factory in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, in 1913, producing celebrated pieces defined by rich glazes and floral motifs.

Moorcroft items are hand-thrown in clay, after which designs are manually outlined using liquid clay or slip in a process known as tube-lining, before being hand-painted with metallic oxide glazes and fired multiple times.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-painted signature monograms alongside impressed factory marks, registration numbers, and often paper labels indicating appointment to royal households.

Place the item on a neutral surface such as a dark timber sideboard or open bookshelf where natural light can accentuate the deep coloured glazes and tactile tube-lined surface.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid submerging in water or exposing the ceramic to direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations to protect the glaze integrity.
